Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former India captain and two-time World Cup winner, announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday, August 15, 2020. His announcement came via an Instagram post and broke the internet. In these 16 years, Dhoni led India through its most successful era and has the 2007 T20 WC, 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy in his cabinet.
As a captain, MS Dhoni had numerous accomplishments to his name across all formats played by the team. Not only did he lead the Indian team to three ICC titles, but he also took the Indian team to no. 1 Test ranking in 2009 as captain. The right-handed batsman last played for India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
His peers often considered MS Dhoni to be a clever cricketer, someone who knew how to build players. His level of understanding of the sport was so good that he used to pick players and then turn them into great players. Dhoni aggregated 17,000 international runs across formats and claimed more than 800 victims as wicketkeeper. He had a calmness about him that was fantastic and he always got the best out of his team. His players respected him and responded to the way Dhoni wanted to play the game.
Besides being India’s most successful captain in the limited-overs format, Dhoni also redefined wicketkeeping skills and earned the reputation of being one of the finest stumpers in the world.
Dhoni evolved over a period of time. He faced both praise and criticism with a calm set of mind. That is what distinguished him as a great cricketer. When he handed over the captaincy to Virat Kohli the transition was very smooth and unbelievable.
The King of DRS lived his life between the stumps. Team Player, Hard Hitter, Captain Cool, Mahi, MS, etc are some of the names which we miss mentioning more when we watch cricket. The cricket field and millions of fans will miss their player number 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
